Job Summary

As a Senior Tax Associate in our State and Local Tax group, you will be a key player in providing advanced tax services with a primary focus on sales and use tax. This role requires high technical expertise in sales and use tax alongside familiarity with other SALT taxes (i.e. state income tax and property tax). You will lead engagements, oversee tax associates, and deliver comprehensive tax solutions across various SALT areas. You will collaborate closely with managers and partners, contributing to the growth and success of the SALT practice.

Key Responsibilities

Develop and implement advanced tax planning strategies with a particular emphasis on sales and use tax issues, such as nexus, exemption certificates, and multistate compliance, while also covering other SALT areas like state income tax and property tax.
Conduct thorough research on SALT issues, interpret new legislation, and provide strategic advice on complex client situations involving SALT tax implications.
Serve as the primary contact for key clients, delivering strategic advice on tax matters, resolving complex client inquiries, and fostering strong client relationships.
Lead and manage sales and use tax audits, prepare required documentation, respond to inquiries from tax authorities, and represent clients in audit negotiations.
Mentor junior associates, reviewing their work, supporting their professional development, and collaborating with managers and partners to achieve departmental goals.
Maintain comprehensive documentation for sales and use tax positions and ensure adherence to compliance requirements and firm standards.

Qualifications

Bachelors or Masters degree in accounting, finance, or a related field; CPA, CMI or similar accreditation preferred.
Three to five years of experience in sales and use tax consulting within a public accounting firm, with additional familiarity in state income tax, property tax, and other SALT areas as a plus.
Deep understanding of sales and use tax laws, regulations, and compliance requirements, with the ability to address complex multistate tax issues.
Knowledge of sales and use tax-specific software systems such as Vertex, Avalara, CCH Sales Tax, and Thomson Reuters ONESOURCE.
Proficiency in general tax and accounting software, including advanced skills in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint).
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills, with a demonstrated ability to manage multiple priorities in a demanding environment.
Exceptional communication and client service skills, with experience in building and maintaining client relationships.
Proven leadership abilities and a commitment to mentoring and developing junior staff.
