The SALT Senior Manager

We are seeking an experienced and highly skilled Senior Manager to join our State and Local Tax (SALT) practice, with a specialization in Income and Sales Tax. This role offers an exciting opportunity to lead complex engagements, drive growth, and provide high-value tax advice to a diverse client base across various industries.

This role will play a crucial part in leading and managing client engagements within our growing SALT practice. The Senior Manager will be a key contributor to the success of the tax team and broader organization, specializing in Income and Sales Tax while leveraging expertise across all areas of SALT.

Key Responsibilities

Client Engagement and Management

Develop and maintain strong client relationships, effectively collaborating with client management to perform tax services.
Communicate complex state and local tax issues in a non-technical manner to facilitate client understanding and risk management.
Conduct regular client meetings to discuss tax strategies and planning opportunities.
Provide guidance on tax compliance processes and best practices.
Lead and manage complex engagements; identify and mitigate potential tax risks for clients.

Technical Expertise

Respond to inquiries from state and other tax authorities.
Advise clients on nexus, unitary and business income, multi-state tax planning, audit defense, M&A due diligence, and other state tax consulting.
Stay current on changes in tax laws, regulations, and rulings for state and local taxes.
Conduct thorough research on complex SALT issues and provide well-reasoned conclusions.
Develop and review tax provision calculations for financial reporting purposes.

Team Leadership and Development

Serve as a performance advisor, mentor, or coach to one or more employees, providing honest and timely performance feedback.
Conduct professional development and training sessions regularly.
Assign and review work of junior staff, ensuring quality and timeliness.
Encourage innovation and continuous improvement within the team.
Promote knowledge sharing and best practices across the SALT practice.

Required Qualifications

Minimum of 10 years of progressive tax compliance and/or tax consulting experience
Extensive State and Local Income Tax (SALT) experience
Proficiency with tax research tools and software (e.g., CCH, RIA, OneSource)
In-depth knowledge of state tax laws and regulations across multiple areas
Experience in managing client relationships at senior levels
