What is an ENERGY STAR Home?

An ENERGY STAR certified home is a home that has been independently verified to meet strict energy efficiency standards set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). These homes are:

  • at least 10% more energy-efficient than standard new homes built to code
  • up to 50% more efficient than homes built before the 1990s.

Key Features of an ENERGY STAR Certified Home

  • High-quality insulation: This helps to keep your home warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
  • High-efficiency heating and cooling systems: These systems use less energy to heat and cool your home.
  • High-performance windows: These windows allow in sunlight but help to keep heat out in the summer and heat in during the winter.
  • Comprehensive water management techniques: These techniques help to prevent water damage and mold growth.
  • Advanced air sealing: This helps to prevent drafts and leaks, which can improve comfort and energy efficiency.

45L Tax Credits and ENERGY STAR

Building an ENERGY STAR certified home isn’t just good for the environment, it’s also good for your wallet. Homeowners can leverage the Section 45L Tax Credit to offset the costs associated with constructing an energy-efficient home.

The 45L tax credit offers a dollar-for-dollar reduction in your federal taxes for the year your ENERGY STAR certified single-family home is sold or leased. The credit amount depends on the specific program your home meets.

How to Get Your Home ENERGY STAR Certified

To get your home ENERGY STAR certified, you will need to work with a builder or developer who is a registered ENERGY STAR partner. The builder or developer will work with you to design and build a home that meets ENERGY STAR requirements. Once your home is built, a certified Home Energy Rater will inspect your home and verify that it meets all of the program requirements.
