Job Summary

The SALT Manager will be responsible for leading and executing a variety of state and local tax initiatives. The ideal candidate will possess strong expertise in sales and use tax, with additional experience in income, franchise, and gross receipts tax considered a plus. This role involves managing state tax nexus studies, conducting in-depth state tax research, managing voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs), and determining the taxability of various products and services.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee state and local tax (SALT) projects, including nexus studies, state tax research, taxability determinations, and tax planning.
Lead sales and use tax projects, including audits, compliance, consulting engagements, and managing related information and people.
Manage state tax compliance, audits, and voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs) with tax authorities.
Develop and implement SALT strategies to reduce tax liability and ensure compliance, including nexus determinations, taxability analyses
Work with clients to advise on tax planning, business issues, and strategies, manage expectations, and resolve tax controversies, including audits and administrative appeals.
Conduct research on state tax legislation, apportionment, revenue sourcing, and other SALT issues to advise clients on tax obligations and potential liabilities.
Mentor and manage a staff of tax professionals, oversee client engagement teams, and provide tax technical training.
Maintain active communication with clients, gather information, make business/process improvement recommendations, and collaborate with internal teams.
Manage engagement staffing, billings, collections, and ensure profitability targets are met.
Prepare technical memoranda on SALT issues and draft client correspondence, including guidance for state tax audits.

Education

Experience

7-12+ years of experience in state and local tax (SALT), with extensive knowledge of sales and use tax.
Familiarity with income, franchise, and gross receipts tax.
Experience in managing SALT projects, including nexus studies, tax research, voluntary disclosure agreements (VDAs), and tax compliance.
Experience with tax planning, tax research, and technical writing.
2+ years of supervisory experience, mentoring, and leading teams.

Skills & Competencies

Strong analytical and research skills, with the ability to interpret complex tax regulations and conduct thorough research.
Excellent project management, organizational, and multitasking abilities.
Strong written and verbal communication skills, with proficiency in technical writing.
Client service-oriented, with the ability to develop strong client relationships.
Proficiency in tax preparation and research software (e.g., Avalara, Vertex)
Ability to work independently, manage multiple projects, and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
Strong computer skills and experience with tax software programs.
Ability to lead, mentor, and supervise staff, with a commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
